This basketry workshop is designed for beginners with the scope to accommodate the interests and skills of intermediate basket weavers as well. I will be introducing locally collected plant fibres like common soft rush, cattail, daylily, iris blades, and some grasses. Participants will learn about foraging for fibres, processing and storage techniques, and how to prepare the fibres for use in weaving.
I will provide all necessary materials for creation of a small basket and will attempt to equip participants with the knowledge to continue on their own in this age old practice after completing the workshop.
Participants should bring secateurs or kitchen scissors and a hand towel to work on. I encourage participants to bring any weavable fibre such as ribbon, yarn, plant fibres from their own gardens to personalize their creation.
Participants should also plan to bring their lunch and snacks.
Covid 19 restrictions will be adhered to, according to current gallery regulations.
At the Ice House Gallery and Grace Arts Centre, we know finances can be a barrier to accessing creative programs and workshops. With the help and support of Canada's Federal Government through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, we are happy to provide a grant to cover the cost of any workshop coming up in the 2022 year. Should you wish to participate, but face a barrier in covering the cost, please reach out confidentially to our manager, Marshall Feit, who will quickly arrange access to the workshop!
Any youth who wish to volunteer with running the workshop (1-2 individuals per workshop), we will be compensating them with TataBucks! These are coupons that can be redeemed for cash at our Tatamagouche Farmers' Market! If you have a young person who would like to volunteer (12-18), reach out to us to arrange a schedule to volunteer!
Any further questions or concerns can be forwarded to Marshall Feit at the Grace Arts Centre at (902) 657 3500, or by email at arts@creamerysquare.ca.
