A retrospective

Peter Labelle

August 31 - October 26, 2024

Opening September 14 11am - 2pm

Love & Light

is a 30-year retrospective of figurative work reflecting on the human experience as informed and guided by the environments that nurture and sustain us.

Representative of work from 1992 through 2024, this selection captures Labelle’s vulnerability, hope and continuous search for connection and meaning.

The artist engages a range of mediums including drawing, oil, encaustic and mixed media assemblage with selected artifacts demonstrating creative process and development.

Labelle invites the viewer to engage, reflect and to find their own meaning. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Peter Labelle is a visual artist, animator, teacher and community arts volunteer.

Labelle works in oils and encaustic wax textured with organic materials. Evolving from concepts explored in his journals and sketchbooks, Labelle’s work contextualizes the interconnection between humanity and nature.

Raised in the small village of Richmond in the Ottawa Valley, Labelle has maintained a reflective journaling and studio practice for over 40 years.

Labelle completed formal training at Sheridan College, Ontario in the Classical Animation, Independent Film Making and Interpretive Illustration programs. He also studied at the Ottawa School of Art in the Intensive Drawing & Painting program.

Labelle moved to Nova Scotia from Timmins, Ontario in 1997 to develop and instruct in the NSCC Digital Animation program. Labelle currently teaches life drawing, painting and sculpture and is the founding chair and faculty advisor for NSCC Animediafest, a festival in its 19th year, and the McCarthy Gallery.

He has served on the Arts Nova Scotia & Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council, Community Arts and Culture Recognition Award Jury and as a selection committee member for the Nova Scotia Talent Trust.

Labelle lives in Truro, Nova Scotia with his partner Charmaine and is the proud father of Keifer, Saren and Shawnacey.

In memory of his children Sienna and Leif, Labelle established the NSCC Animation Camp for Children which funds the Sienna & Leif Labelle Memorial Scholarship in support of emerging artists who demonstrate creativity and a commitment to community engagement.

His works are in private collections.
